Defeat LDs 816 and 418!
These bills disenfranchise every Maine voter. They would implement the “National Popular Vote” scheme in Maine. This would have the effect of eliminating the Electoral College in presidential elections. The Electoral College protects the voters in small states like Maine.
If this scheme passes in just a dozen states, a voter in New York, California, or Hawaii could change how Maine’s electors cast their vote. Maine’s electors could have to vote for a candidate who did not even qualify to be on Maine’s ballot.
Let’s stop this scheme and ensure that Maine’s representatives to the Electoral College reflect the votes of Mainers.
The Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee voted to not pass LD 418, but LD 816 had a divided report, 7 to 6, as with the seven members voting Ought Not To Pass and six voting Ought To Pass. This bill will now go on to be debated in the Senate and House. Now is the time to contact your Senator and your Representative let them know your thoughts on this bill.
