You wouldn’t make a major purchase for your family without knowing the price tag—it’s just common sense. Right now, the out-of-state special interests putting referendums out to Maine voters are not required to include the cost of the law on the ballot. Legislators are given this information when they vote on laws, but the people of Maine are not. That’s not right.
Voters should be presented with all the facts, especially the price tag, when making a decision at the ballot box. This is a simple, straightforward, common-sense change to the referendum process. It’s also a change that can be implemented without having to amend the Constitution. Contact the legislators hearing this bill and ask them to support it. If they vote against this bill, they are sending the message that they are entitled to information that they deny you.
