Paul begins with a vivid demand. Having Christ among them, heavenly glory is their hope, even to share with Him that glory. Now, if that is so, the Christian must rise from baptism a different man. You've risen with Christ. They needed to know, I will not say, that Christ suffices only; but that there is such fulness of blessing and glory in Christ as utterly to eclipse and condemn all that flesh would glory in. Many can bear a short provocation who are weary of bearing when it grows long. The argument here used to enforce the exhortation is very affecting: Put on, as the elect of God, holy and beloved. We must never allow one truth to be either shut out or enfeebled by another; but then we need also to remember that there are, and have always been, those that, having begun seemingly well, have ended by becoming the enemies of Christ and the church. Verse 16 begins with the word "for" ( hoti in Greek) and thus indicates that Paul . But here writes the lowly-minded apostle, in the full assurance that, though he had never seen them, or they him, it would be real and mutual gratification to know about one another from him who went between them. Thus the doctrine of God would dwell richly, that is, abundantly, among them. A man alive in the world is under these ordinances, and owns them. When the Christian was baptized, he put off his old clothes when he went down into the water and when he emerged he put on a new and pure white robe. Such is the only sure root of all blessing, and in this above all is real faith and spirituality shown. It is evident, therefore, that to enter on the privileges of the church, the body of Christ, would have in nowise met the evil which the enemy was seeking to inflict on the Colossians. this was the serious question, and this it was which God was waiting to solve. To the Colossians the Holy Ghost has to speak about their state, and along with this to present the truth of Christ as a remedy for it; not so much as the centre of blessedness and joy in the communion of the saints, but as supplying the true and only divine corrective to the efforts of Satan, who would drag them down into tradition on the one hand, and into philosophy on the other, the too common snares of human nature, and the latter more particularly for cultivated and reasoning minds. Different nations, who either despised or hated each other, were drawn into the one family of the Christian Church. The gospel is the word of Christ, which has come to us; but that is not enough, it must dwell in us, or keep house--enoikeito, not as a servant in a family, who is under another's control, but as a master, who has a right to prescribe to and direct all under his roof. He only is the constitutive power of the unity that we are exhorted to keep. He lays the foundation in faith, and the top-stone in charity, which is the bond of perfectness, the cement and centre of all happy society. Luther himself said, "Spare the rod and spoil the child. Yet the cross was the precise and only place where the foundation that cannot be moved was laid. There can never have been a time in history when so much filthy language is used as today. Singing of psalms is a teaching ordinance as well as a praising ordinance; and we are not only to quicken and encourage ourselves, but to teach and admonish one another, mutually excite our affections, and convey instructions. Many have the word of Christ dwelling in them, but it dwells in them but poorly; it has no mighty force and influence upon them. "Behold, He comethevery eye shall see Him" ( Revelation 1:7 ). And that is not enough. In Christ all these barriers were broken down. Yet even this did not reconcile man to God, but the very reverse rather; it proved that man was irreconcilable as far as he was concerned. But if I am dead, what have I to do with those things that only affect men as long as they live? The way to right action is to appoint Jesus Christ as the arbiter between the conflicting emotions in our hearts; and if we accept his decisions, we cannot go wrong. He could not say in this epistle "worthy of your vocation," as in writing to the Ephesians. If a divine person was pleased to appear here below, and to bring in unimagined goodness and power, dealing with every need and every one with whom He came in contact, and who sought or even accepted His gracious action, it might have been supposed that man could not resist such unhesitating love and unmeasured power. Things which the world thought important, he will no longer worry about. Such a desire, says Paul, is idolatry. Thus the mystery includes, first, Christ as Head above, we though here being united by the Holy Ghost to Him glorified. Paul was the one that God raised up to fill the gap. We need the same good turn from others which we are bound to show them. You're doing well--very well. He is answerable to God, just as his workmen are answerable to him. There was no provision for the aged. And here we come back to where this passage started--that is precisely why the Christian sets his mind and heart on the things which are above and not on the things of this world. Long ago Aristotle had defined praotes as the happy mean between too much and too little anger. The whole direction of the Christian ethic is not to ask: "What do others owe to me?" Had you to do with the law? Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ." It is not a question of the lower ranks of creation only, but takes in the highest "whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him." I am responsible to him." There are few here, it is to be supposed, who are not already aware that to put in "the Father" (as is done in the Authorized Version in italics) is to take away from the Son without warrant and dangerously. We have to loose everything, and then he is going to take off. Macho, "I know what I'm doing. "Watch in the same with thanksgiving; withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak." Humbleness of mind, in submission to those above us, and condescension to those below us. Dwell -- by study, meditation, and application so it becomes permament. But that for which they were opposed to him was the very thing for which, most of all, they should have owned their debt under God. The answer is important, for in it there is the whole Christian doctrine of work. I am aware that men have reasoned much about it; but this is a proof that evidence fails. He who believes this would understand that it was still an unrevealed secret during Old Testament times. ), "Colossians 3:1-4 has provided the perspective from which the daily life of the Colossian Christians should be lived out. This is the only allusion to the Spirit, as far as I remember, in the epistle. It lies at the bottom when we think of the wants of the saints of God here below. He it is, the Holy Spirit of God, who we are warned not to grieve. What Paul is saying is, "Put to death every part of your self which is against God and keeps you from fulfilling his will." To preserve in us this peaceable disposition, we must be thankful. We give thanks to God and the Father in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,Ephesians 5:20. Dr. Johnson once said, that if he were allowed to make the ballads of a nation, he cared not who made the laws. 3:5-9a So, then, put to death these parts of you which are earthly-- fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, the desire to get more than you ought--for this is idol worship; and because of these things the wrath of God comes upon those who are disobedient. Do we feel and know that we can add nothing to Him? A courteous disposition becomes the elect of God; for the design of the gospel is not only to soften the minds of men, but to sweeten them, and to promote friendship among men as well as reconciliation with God. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, [now, you put on Jesus Christ, you put off these things, put off anger, wrath, and malice and instead, put on] bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, and if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God. Here the doctrine carries one a little farther than eitherRomans 6:1-23; Romans 6:1-23 or 1 Peter 3:1-22. But does this so much as resemble the provision of grace for the Christian? Yet there were men not wanting then that denied him to be an apostle. How is it to be done? Proud, fallen nature is satisfied even by these efforts to put down the body; whereas God would have the body to have a certain honour in its own place, and that of the Christian is the temple of the Holy Ghost. In Romans one he says, "For the wrath of God is going to be revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who hold the truth of God in unrighteousness" ( Romans 1:18 ). But it is our duty to forgive one another, imitating the forgiveness through which we are saved. I can do what I want." None of the others has touched on it not one. The life of the Christian is hidden with Christ in God. Secondly, Christ, meanwhile, is in or among the Gentiles here below. He belonged to God's chosen people and the other nations were fit only to be fuel for the fires of hell. The workman must do everything as if he was doing it for Christ. He now brings Him in openly, and to ourselves. And in us, poor feeble souls, why should not this peace rule in our hearts, to the which also we are called in one body? But there is always a problem in the relationship of parent and child. People will say, "How is it that on Monday you can be so happy; you're whistling. But alas! I have been crucified with Christ, thus I am dead to the flesh and to the things of the flesh and to the life of the flesh; I should not be living after the flesh. The Spirit of God applies the truth of Jesus Christ, which resists all such thoughts as human. Thus baptism is not limited to signifying death. Of course it is not at all being dead to what a man had as a natural life in the world. For this has a connection with his argument. Compassion towards the miserable: Bowels of mercy, the tenderest mercies. The false teachers called their books of so-called wisdom apokruphoi ( G614) , the books that were hidden from all except from those who were initiated. On the other hand, the epistle to the Ephesians abounds with such allusions. They have undoubtedly taught that which is consistent with it and even supposes it. It is somewhat startling at first sight to realize such a fact, but if it be a fact as I unqualifiedly assert is it not of great moment to understand it? In this context it is much more likely that what is forbidden is slanderous talk against one's fellow-men. And what is he then entitled to see? If it is the desire for prestige, it leads to evil ambition. The epistle to the Ephesians views the saint as already blessed by God in heavenly places in Christ. Let the word of Christ" (it was God's word, but still called the word of Christ here) "dwell in you richly in all wisdom." Human patience is a reflection of the divine patience which bears with all our sinning and never casts us off. There is not a chapter in it where the Holy Ghost has not a most important and essential place. But He is the Christ that God raised from the dead and seated in heavenly glory. Whenever Christ, your life, shall appear, then you too shall appear with him in glory. 2. Isn't it interesting how we want to make sure that our children don't make the same mistakes that we made. If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Who can be so deeply concerned as the Christian? It must go on all the time, so that more of the old nature is conquered and the new person is more like God (8-10).Since the goal of the Christian life is to become like Christ, there is no way that Christians can be divided into superior or inferior classes according to race, culture or social status. A man seeks to shine in the world now; it is a heedless if not heartless forgetfulness, that here He knew nothing but rejection. It is contrary to the injunction here for congregations to "whistle" or to play mechanical instruments, the latter having been associated throughout history with pagan worship (Daniel 3:4-7). Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,Matthew 6:12. This remains for the day of Christ's glory, and will fill a most important part in the purposes of God. "Let this peace rule in your heart--prevail and govern there, or as an umpire decide all matters of difference among you." He was a minister both of the gospel, and, as is said a little later, of the church two very different spheres, seldom united in the same individual. Thereby he shows that God's love and grace have gone out to the ends of the earth, and that there is no "most favoured nation" clause in his economy. Years before, when he was writing to the Galatians, he had said, "It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me" ( Galatians 2:20). Had they prayed more, the result might have been to better purpose. He must say, "This is God's business. Am I entitled, as I look upon Christians henceforth, to see nothing but Christ in any and Christ in every one? [Note: Wiersbe, 2:140. To the former the Holy Ghost could launch out into the fulness of our blessing in Christ. The love was not natural affection; it was love in the Spirit: but this is very far from the rich place given to His personal presence and action elsewhere. Colossians 1:15 opens the first major section of the poem. Hence it seems to me not in whom, but rightly "wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God." Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all ( Colossians 3:11 ). Also the reason seems obvious. Those who are holy are the elect of God; and those who are the elect of God, and holy, are beloved--beloved of God, and ought to be so of all men. Towards the end of his life Joad came back to religion and returned to the family of the Church; but it was not without a struggle, and it was the insistence of the Christian Church on sexual purity which kept him so long from making the final decision. "If any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye." No doubt the hint is wanted by some of us still. And how is this to be accomplished? THE MUTUAL OBLIGATION ( Colossians 3:18-25 ; Colossians 4:1 continued). New American Standard Version (i) The wife is to be submissive to her husband; but the husband is to love his wife and to treat her with all kindness. The needed and only remedy was to turn the eyes of the saints from other objects, even their own privileges, and to fix them on Christ. After this follow particular exhortations, on which we need not at present dwell. But the apostle took every pains to, show how great was the love of Epaphras for them; for his faithful spirit knew some little of that which the apostle knew well, that the more abundantly he loved, the less he was loved. This change was effected by Christianity." The cross of Christ is the death-knell of the world in all its pretensions before God. The exhortation to let it, dwell in them, supposes that it had entered into them, and had a place in them through the spirit and power of Christ; and that it should have a constant and fixed place there, and not be like a stranger or wayfaring man, that tarries but for a night, or like a sojourner, that continues but for a while; but as an inhabitant that takes up its residence and abode, never more to depart; and intends not only a frequent reading, and hearing of, and meditating upon the word of God but continuance in the doctrines of the Gospel, with a steady faith in them, and a hearty affection for them; for such an inhabitation imports a very exact knowledge of the Gospel, and familiarity with it, and affectionate respect for it; as persons that dwell in a house, they are well known by those of the family, they are familiarly conversed with, and are treated with love and respect by them: and so the word of Christ, when it has a fixed and established abode in a man's heart, he has an inward, spiritual, experimental knowledge of it; he is continually conversant with it; this word of Christ is his delight, and the men of his counsel his guide, his acquaintance, with whom he takes sweet counsel together, and esteems it above the most valuable things in the world, and receives and retains it as the word of God. Ephesians 5:19. Paul begins with a heart of pity. Here was an amazing thing. It is an effort to become dead to what is wrong; to cultivate what is felt to be glorifying to God; to avoid what is contrary to His will, and injurious to the soul. Yet above all the saints are to put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness; "and let the peace of Christ rule," for so it reads, not the peace of God, but the peace of Christ. When a person is baptized, this is the meaning of the act; nor has it any true force, but is an illusion, otherwise. It is not, as in the Ephesian epistle, the riches of the glory of God's inheritance in the saints, but closely resembles a comparatively lower line of things which comes before us in the first epistle of Peter. The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is our God and Father; and He has blessed with every possible blessing, and in the highest sphere and on the best ground. For the Christian the burst of temper and the long-lasting anger are alike forbidden. "Wherefore," says he, "if ye be dead with Christ "which is one grand part of his subject "if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living [or alive] in the world, are ye subject to ordinances?" While there is no doubt that which requires to be cut down or pruned on every side, there is a gradual development of divine life in the saints of God; and this, as being through the Spirit's use of the truth, by no means can be all at once. It pleased the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry." They do it heartily; they do it with joyfulness. Paul only. A substantially similar blessing is stamped on the table of the Lord. But, even in making your living, if you will do things heartily as unto the Lord, it will open up many opportunities for you to witness. It is most true in its place; but it addresses rather the sense of responsibility than the communion of affections of the children of God. There is gentleness (praotes, G4236) . There is patience (makrothumia, G3115) . Some of old were not Jews nor Gentiles, but baptized men and women. Leave to unbelievers that foolish delight which they take from ludicrous and frivolous jests and witticisms; (453) and let your communications, not merely those that are grave, but those also that are joyful and exhilarating, contain something profitable. Simply because he wishes the child to do well, he is always on his top. What he is saying, that these aren't the things that make you righteous. It was not the Father, but the Godhead. There are at least two vivid pictures here. But there appears to be here an allusion to the Shechinah, or symbol of the Divine presence, which dwelt in the tabernacle and first temple; and to an opinion common among the Jews, which is thus expressed in Melchita, fol. This will obviously give him a new set of values. To receive it as the faithful blow of our best friend in His own word may not seem the readiest way toward comfort; but the comfort that we get in the end from Him who thus smites is both real and stable, and rich in profit to the soul.
